Hollywood Stars in the West End

When It Comes to Stars of the Silver Screen, the West End has it Covered

It’s well known that the West End attracts some of the biggest names from around the world, whether it is in the form of performers and director or writers and choreographers, but in some cases this also means that shows feature the biggest names from the big screen. So a trip to the West End can sometimes feel like a trip to Hollywood considering some of the movie stars that are treading the boards and more and more icons are making the move.

Currently there are a number of shows featuring familiar names from the big screen – including “Driving Miss Daisy” with Vanessa Redgrave and James Earl Jones and “Death and the Maiden” with Thandie Newton – and there are more to come. Only recently it was announced that Zach Braff would be making the transition to the West End with his debut play “All New People” and there’s no doubt that even more stars of the screen will be landing in the capital soon.

Those wishing to pick up tickets for “Driving Miss Daisy” will be able to see the show at the Wyndham’s Theatre, where it is booking to mid-December. It is based on Alfred Uhry’s famous play and was also adapted into a famous movie starring Morgan Freeman. This time around, however, it features James Earl Jones, the star of movies like “Field of Dreams” and well known for providing his voice to screen icons like Darth Vader in the “Star Wars” series and King Mufasa in “The Lion King”. Vanessa Redgrave, meanwhile, has appeared in the likes of “Atonement” and “Mary, Queen of Scots”, among others.

Meanwhile, audiences can also hit the box office to pick up tickets to “Death and the Maiden”, which is running to the end of December at the Harold Pinter Theatre. It concerns a former political prisoner coming face to face with her possible captor and stars Thandie Newton in the lead role. Newton has appeared in a wide range of movies, including “Mission: Impossible II”, “The Pursuit of Happyness”, “Run, Fatboy, Run” and “Crash”, among others.

But together, movies and music fuse and work well to complement each other. In film, music helps to bring certain emotions and moods to the camera with signature tunes that we all remember. Everyone is familiar with the musical scores of Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park and The Terminator, showing that music makes up a large part of their long lasting popularity. Likewise, movies are used in music, either when a movie helps a certain song gain popularity by including it on its soundtrack or when a music video is made to show off the latest single. (more…)
