Chicago is a musical based on a play written by Maurine Dallas Watkins. She was a reporter for the Chicago Tribune assigned to cover two trials in 1924 which both featured females accused of murder. Their names were Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner. The bulk of the plot is plucked right from the headlines she wrote herself. The characters are unmistakably based on these women, along with their lawyers. The character of Billy Flynn was created by combining the defendant’s lawyers in both trials. (more…)
